Councillor Di Clements Announces Candidacy for Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council
--
Councillor Di Clements, the County Councillor for Martletwy and the current leader of the Welsh Conservative Group on Pembrokeshire County Council, has officially announced her candidacy for the position of Council Leader at the upcoming Annual General Meeting in May 2024.
Since being elected in 2017, Di has never shied away from scrutinising the way the council spends its money. Having lived in Pembrokeshire for nearly 40 years and run a dairy farm alongside her husband she understands the demands and stresses of running her own business. Di has always brought the same sense of business responsibility to her role as councillor and has regularly called in council-led projects to properly scrutinise their value for money for Pembrokeshire and the taxpayer.
This has never been as important as it is now as the council faces an unprecedented funding gap of £31.9 million and Pembrokeshire residents have seen their council tax bills increase by 12.5% this year, coupled with significant service cuts.
With two adult children both having been educated and now living and working in the county, she has a deep-rooted connection to the local community. In 2022, Councillor Clements was voted as Chair of the Pembrokeshire National Park Authority, with notable significant achievements and a commitment to sustainable development and conservation efforts that benefit all of Pembrokeshire during her tenure.
A fair and transparent approach has earned her an admirable cross-party reputation for making tough decisions and for working with all her colleagues to find resolutions to issues.
Councillor Clements said: "It is with a profound sense of duty and optimism that I put my name forward for leader of Pembrokeshire County Council. Our community deserves robust leadership that not only understands our unique challenges but also the immense potential of our beautiful county. I am proud to call Pembrokeshire my home and I am committed to working hard to ensure we as councillors prioritise spending for the betterment of all residents."
Adding to her commitment to fiscal responsibility, Councillor Clements emphasised: "As your Council Leader, I pledge to ensure that taxpayer funds are spent wisely and not to shy away from the responsibility of managing council spending. We must ensure that every pound is invested in a way that delivers real value and benefits directly to the taxpayers of Pembrokeshire."
Under her leadership, the Welsh Conservative Group has focused on providing robust scrutiny and opposition of the current administration’s policies. As Council Leader, Councillor Clements aims to review current policies and project spends, ensuring that the interests of local taxpayers are always at the forefront.
The Annual General Meeting, scheduled for May 10, 2024, will be a pivotal moment for Pembrokeshire County Council and residents are encouraged to watch the meeting via live stream or attend the public gallery.
