Estyn inspectors have reported that Dysgu Cymraeg Sir Benfro Learn Welsh Pembrokeshire is delivering good and excellent provision for learners.
Learn Welsh Pembrokeshire is accessed by around 800 learners each year, providing mainstream courses from Mynediad/Entry to Uwch/Advance level.
It is an independent provider under the National Centre for Learning Welsh, which provides core funding, and sits within the Community and Youth Education Department at Pembrokeshire County Council.
It is based at Narberth Community Learning Centre, with classes held a various other venues and online.
Estyn found that managers work with the senior officer of the Community and Youth Education Department to develop provision to respond to the county’s Welsh learning needs.
Learners were seen to participate enthusiastically and interact well in lessons and there were many opportunities to take part in informal activities and events, which all boost use of the language.
Learners progressed in speaking Welsh, and also reading and writing.
Standards were found to be good, as were teaching and learning experiences, and leadership and management, while wellbeing and attitudes to learning and care, support and guidance were classed as excellent.
Strengthening strategic planning processes, sharpening processes for evaluating teaching and monitoring progress were recommendations made by Estyn.
Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language Cllr Guy Woodham welcomed the report.
“We are delighted that Dysgu Cymraeg Sir Benfro is doing so well in helping people achieve the highest level of Welsh learning they can and I thank the hard working tutors for all they do.
“The passion for the Welsh language demonstrated by managers and tutors has led to a welcoming and successful learning environment for those at all levels, learning in person, online or in work at PCC.”
