Carers Week 2023 recognises vital work of carers and highlights the support available
--
Organisations across Pembrokeshire will be celebrating Carers Week between 5th and 11th June.
Carers Week runs every year to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities across the UK.
It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access support.
A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older.
Caring's impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work can be significant.
Whilst many feel that caring is one of the most important things they do, the challenges should not be underestimated.
Caring without the right information and support can be tough. It is vitally important that we recognise the contribution carers make to their families and local communities, workplaces and society, and that they get the support they need.
All of us will have our lives touched by caring at some point as three in five people will become carers.
In Pembrokeshire, more than 10% of the population have caring responsibilities.
The role that carers play in our society is invaluable and must not be under-estimated.
To acknowledge the contribution and value of carers, Carers Week is being celebrated in Pembrokeshire by a range of organisations.
Adferiad Recovery (PCISS), Action for Children, PAVS, Pembrokeshire County Council, and Hywel Dda University Health Board are putting on a range of free activities across the county for carers such as:
· Carers Event at Scolton Manor with a tour of the garden and house
· Find the Community Hub and Connectors in Haverfordwest for information and advice about what’s on in the community, as well as support to get online
· Workways + will be offering carers a free hot drink and cake in their cafes
· Carers Afternoon Tea in St David’s
2 / 4
Details of all activities can be found at Carers Support West Wales or by calling Pembrokeshire Carers Information and Support Service (PCISS) on 01437 611002.
Cllr Mike James, Carers Champion at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: “Carers Week is the perfect time to thank carers in Pembrokeshire for the incredible work they do.
“It is also a great opportunity to remind that there is support available for carers locally.”
