Mustard, gravy and mushy peas? The UK’s ULTIMATE builders’ breakfast revealed
· 1 in 11 tradies prefer gravy or mushy peas to ketchup on their full English
· Beans, hash browns and black pudding are the least popular breakfast items
Do you have gravy on a full English breakfast? If so, it turns out you’re not the only one.
Tradespeople around the UK have been voting for their most and least favourite items on a Full English, with the results revealing some unusual breakfast habits.
Surprisingly, almost one in 12 (8%) said mustard is their favourite sauce, and 7% admitted they can’t live without mayonnaise on their fry up. One in 11 tradies (9%) even said they prefer gravy or mushy peas to ketchup on their Full English.
The most common choice, brown sauce, narrowly beat red sauce to be crowned the ultimate breakfast condiment.
The study, conducted by online metal suppliers metals4U, asked over 500 tradespeople what their favourite items on a builder’s breakfast were. Bacon, sausages and fried eggs came out on top, but the data revealed that many tradespeople were ready to let go of some fry up classics.
Interestingly, almost 4 in 5 are happy to go without baked beans, three-quarters would ditch tomatoes, and 85% don’t believe hash browns are an important part of the traditional English brekkie.
Black pudding was the least popular item on a Full English, with just 13% of tradespeople wanting it.
The UK’s top 5 favourite breakfast items are:
1. Bacon
2. Sausages
3. Fried egg
4. Mushrooms
5. Scrambled egg
Brit’s least favourite items include:
1. Black pudding
2. Hash browns
3. Poached egg
4. Beans
5. Toast
The data also revealed regional differences with tradespeople in Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle preferring sausages, while bacon is more popular down South.
The north/south divide continues when it comes to breakfast sandwiches, coffee and sauces. Northerners like to start their morning with a bacon butty with red sauce and a cup of tea, but tradespeople in the south prefer to kick off their day with a sausage sandwich, brown sauce and a coffee.
Paul McFadyen, CEO at metals4U, had this to say about the research:
"The Full English breakfast is a hallmark of British culture, and the best items have been heavily debated over the years. While we expected bacon, sausages and other fry up classics to come out on top, the research threw some real curveballs with mustard, gravy and mushy peas!
“We were surprised to see hashbrowns, black pudding and beans so low, and imagine this might cause a few disagreements on construction sites around the country.”
