Fresh produce saved from skip thanks to community fridge
Fresh produce that is at risk of being thrown out of local supermarkets is now being given a reprieve thanks to the Tenby Community Fridge which is operating from the Old Chapel on Lower Frog Street.
Locals are being invited to pop in and pick up any items which might be suitable for their own culinary use. As a result, hundreds of kilos of fresh food are being saved on a regular basis.
The food is collected from the supermarkets by a team of volunteers who go round during the evenings to collect all the fresh produce destined for the skip.
The Tenby Community Fridge was established in 2021 with the sole purpose of salvaging all perishable foods that have reached their sell-by date at the local supermarkets. These include fresh fruit and vegetables, delicatessen items such as cheeses and cold meats and items from the bakery including baguettes, rolls and fresh pastries. The food is available to everyone, however people are asked to only take items for their own personal use
The Community Fridge is usually open between Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 11am until 3pm.
If anyone is interested in volunteering with the project, they are asked to pop in to the Old Chapel to find out more about how the system operates.
