History made at St Davids RNLI with 'passing out' of first female helm
St Davids lifeboat crew has made history after welcoming its first female to helm the inshore lifeboat.
Ellen Evans, Maritime Operations officer at HM Coastguard, passed out as the charity’s D-Class helm earlier this month following a rigorous practical assessment afloat, which ensured she could manage the boat and its crew safely. Search planning and VHF radio assessments were also carried out as well as a written paper covering International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea.
Qualifying at the same time as Ellen was Julian Whitewright, Maritime Archaeologist at the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.
Their achievement have been celebrated by the St Davids' crew.
"Both Ellen and Julian have put in a tremendous amount of time and effort into completing all the required training to fulfil the roles and to be an inshore lifeboat commander," said Will Chant, RNLI Coxswain for St Davids RNLI lifeboat.
"I'm delighted for both of them in light of the work and time they've invested, and thank them for their commitment to the charity."
Latest figures from the RNLI confirm that only 12% of lifeboat crews throughout the UK contain female members.
