A Milford Haven newborn baby is fighting for her life this week after being placed on life support machinery following her premature birth.
Little Skylar Griffiths was delivered on Friday, August 9, at Glangwili Hospital after what her mother, Kayleigh Griffiths, described as 'a difficult pregnancy.'
"We knew, during the pregnancy, that her red blood count was raised with the result that she wasn't getting enough nutrients," Kayleigh told Pure West Radio.
"She was born last Friday, after 37 weeks and a day, and she came out not crying, so we knew that something was seriously wrong. It appears that she has no brain activity at all."
Skylar was immediately conveyed to Singleton Hospital's intensive care unit in Swansea, where she was placed on life support machinery. This includes a ventilator after it was discovered that she has significant pressure on her lungs.
"At the moment she's unable to take any breaths by herself and this afternoon [Monday], the medics are talking about taking her down for an MRI scan. But if they do this, there's a big risk that she'll pass away.
"All we can do is hope that little Skylar will somehow get that little bit stronger so that the doctors can find out what's wrong with her. At the moment no one knows the full extent of her problems, which means that nothing can be done to help her."
Kayleigh and her partner, Brian Underwood, hired a car to travel from their home in Milford Haven to Glangwili for the birth.
"Obviously we had no idea that this was going to happen and we had every intention of coming home with her," said Kayleigh. "But sadly things haven't worked out this way."
The hired car had to returned on Monday, August 12, with the result that Kayleigh and Brian have no means of travelling to and from Milford to see their other children who are currently being looked after by family members and friends.
Now Brian's sister, Sarah Underwood, has set up a gofundme page to help the new parents stay with their baby girl.
"I would love to be able to help them more myself, but unfortunately I can't," said Sarah. "So I'm asking for help to keep them with their baby girl when they need to be there with her so much."
