Pembrokeshire waste and recycling centre under threat of closure
A Pembrokeshire waste and recycling centre is once again under threat of closure after being granted a temporary reprieve in the 2024-25 budget plans.
The St Davids Waste and Recycling Centre was earmarked for closure in this year’s budget as a result of Pembrokeshire County Council’s budget shortfall, which amounts to approximately £84 million over the next four years. However the proposed closure was granted a delay of one year.
But now the closure is once again up for reconsideration. Pembrokeshire County Council has stated that the St Davids WRC is underused, with local residents having the option to use the nearby waste and recycling centres at Manorowen or Winsel. The local authority has also stated that the St Davids site needs major improvements to meet environmental standards which would cost around £250,000. It's closure would result in an annual saving of £70,000.
Earlier this year a 2,000 signature petition was handed in to county hall, requesting that the centre remains open. There are fears that the council's proposal to collect black bags every four weeks will result in increased fly tipping in the area, while people who own second homes may not be present at their properties when collections are made, which will limit their methods of disposing of their waste.
Residents of the St Davids, Solva and Llanrhian catchment areas are now being urged to submit their views on the proposed closure to Cllr Rhys Sinnett, who is the cabinet member for Residents Services by August 27, ahead of the report which will be submitted the Policy Overview and Scrutiny Committee for its consideration on Tuesday, September 17.
Pembrokeshire is currently served by six waste and recycling centres, while Carmarthenshire has four.
