'Re-wilding' popular Pembrokeshire beauty spot is attracting rough sleepers, claim locals
Plans to re-wild a popular Pembrokeshire beauty spot have backfired after rough sleepers are choosing to use the area, leaving behind human waste.
The grass around Fortune's Frolic, situated on the banks of the western Cleddau opposite to the County Council offices in Haverfordwest, has been left to grow in an attempt to increase biodiversity.
However rough sleepers have been using the area to pitch their tents and are leaving human waste around the site. As a result, dog walkers and families with young children who previously enjoyed visiting the Frolic are now abandoning the beauty spot, claiming the area is unusable.
Local county councillor Di Clements, who represents nearby Uzmaston, has now called a public meeting where local residents together with Pembrokeshrie County Council officials, are being invited to reach an agreement on how the area should subsequently be managed.
"While I understand the statutory requirement of the county council to increase biodiversity, we now have a once well used amenity area that is being used less and less, and attracting complaints," she said.
"It used to be a place where dog walkers and families would go for picnics, but now the grass is so long, people avoid it. It's a shame."
The public meeting will take place at Fortune's Frolic on September 2 at 2 pm. People are being asked to meet by the entrance. For further details, Cllr Clements can be contacted on 07918 945380.
