What came first - The words or the music? Well, now's your chance to find out!
Four critically acclaimed Pembrokeshire singer-songwriters are to perform in a format based on the Songwriters' Circle, which originated in the American home of country, blues, folk, and roots music in Nashville, Tennessee.
The four acts will remain on stage for the whole concert and will take it in turns to perform a song, as opposed to performing their entire sets one after the other. This makes for a different kind of show, as audiences can get up close and personal with the performers.
BB Skone, presenter of the 'Pembrokeshire Music Show' on Pure West Radio, will be the MC for the evening and will be talking to the performers about how and why they wrote the songs. He will also be encouraging interaction between the writers and the audience. So if you’ve ever wanted to ask a songwriter, 'What comes first - the words or the music?' - here’s your chance!
The four artists comprise:
'With a voice described as having ‘elemental power’, Abbie Jebbers' songs are organic, earthy and soulful. Her vocals are powerful, raw and expressive, accompanied by rhythmic and catchy guitar progressions.
Currently living in St Davids, Abbie's songwriting is heavily influenced by the natural world. Her sound has been likened to that of Joni Mitchell through both her lyrics and melodies. Her debut EP 'Run With Wolves' was released in July 2015 and received excellent reviews and she has featured on the Jamie Owen show on BBC Radio Wales and has been Artist of the Week on BB Skone's Pembrokwshire Music Show. Her second EP 'Moana' released in 2017, was an ode to the sea, inspired by the wild waters of west Wales. In February 2022, she released a collaborative single, 'Water', with Behind Sundown. Her recent single 'Sunflowers' was produced by Rona Mac, who is another well known St Davids singer-songwriter. All proceeds from this record are going to the Get the Boys a Lift charity in Haverfordwest.
She has played a number of festivals across the UK, as well as regular gigs closer to home in venues such as The Queens Hall, Narberth, and Llys Meddyg, Newport.
Chris Swales is a Pontypridd-born, Tenby-based alt-folk / singer-songwriter, who is better known as one half of Desert Life - a band formed with multi-instrumentalist Tom Jordan in 2018. Desert Life have played throughout west Wales, at The Swansea Fringe Festival and Lush. The band’s first-ever release, ‘Not My Girl’, was aired by BBC Wales ’Adam Walton via BBC Introducing. ‘Whisper to the Wind ’won a Syncr Music Competition, and ‘My darling friend ’was the runner-up in the Radio Wigwam’s ‘best single ’category. The band also made the Record Store Day 'Unsigned (2019) long list' and they have been Artist of the Week with BB Skone's Pembrokeshire Music Show on Pure West Radio.
They have recorded live sessions for Welsh Connections, Pure West Radio, and GTFM’s Alternative show and will be playing at the BOIA festival, St Davids, in October 2024.
21-year-old singer/songwriter Honey Rich from Crymych, has been writing music since childhood, ever since she first heard the music of acclaimed artists Amy Winehouse and Taylor Swift. Over the years, she has been fine-tuning her skills, writing songs that reflect her life and her heart in hopes of finding people who connect to her music. She recently performed on the Pure West Radio stage at the Pembrokeshire County Show. Honey's songs also contain a strong element of her wit and humour.
Duncan Whitehurst began his songwriting career performing with his wife, violinist Rebecca Whitehurst over 30 years ago. The duo were well-established on the national folk music scene when they formed the legendary folk-rock band The Rainkings in the late ‘90s. Following a few quiet years, Duncan and Rebecca returned to their acoustic roots in 2018 with a new band, The Lucky 12. The album ‘Into the Light ’followed a year later and contained a remarkable collection of bittersweet stories about old friends, old amusement arcades, procrastination, politics, the perils of country music, foolhardy sea-based games and benches. Duncan’s songs are written in the classic style; the lyrics unfold with a joyful melancholy, revealing a deep spirituality combined with the occasional darker detour and trademark political edge.
The Songwriters' Circle takes place at St Mary's Church Hall, Tenby, on Wednesday, September 25 at 7.30 pm. Admission is £5.
