In the week that a swan was found bludgeoned to the ground at the Withybush Woods in Haverfordwest, RSPCA Cymru has announced that its animal cruelty figures for 2024 continue to rise sharply.
Figures released up to the end of June show that there were 44,879 reports of cruelty towards animals across England and Wales which is more than 2% higher than the corresponding period in 2023.
Earlier this year, a hedgehog was found in a garden in Haverfordwest having been shot with an air gun.
A subsequent veterinary examination concluded that the hedgehog had probably been shot a week prior to its discovery, and the attack was likely to have been deliberate.
The shot had dislocated the hedgehog’s shoulder, and sadly the vet recommended that the animal be euthanized on welfare grounds.
The RSPCA has now launched its ‘No Animal Deserves Cruelty’ summer appeal as it continues to respond to this season’s continued rise in cruelty attacks. It is making an impassioned plea calling for tighter controls and a clearer explanation of the law when buying an air gun. It is also requesting that everyone receives basic safety training before being allowed to leave a shop having purchased an an air gun.
