Honours presented in special ceremonies

Five inspirational Pembrokeshire people received royal honours in two special ceremonies last month.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, presented the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and three British Empire Medals (BEM) at a ceremony in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Haverfordwest on Friday, June 7th.
The Lord-Lieutenant then attended at Crymych Fire Station on Friday, June 28th to present a British Empire Medal to a long-serving Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MWFFRS) Firefighter.
Lord-Lieutenant Cadet Annis Henton assisted the Lord-Lieutenant at both presentations.
At County Hall, Haverfordwest, receiving the MBE for voluntary services to the RNLI, was Miss Doreen Mortimer MBE.
The MBE is awarded to recognise achievement or service which has delivered sustained and real impact and acts as an example to others.
Miss Mortimer MBE has been a volunteer RNLI shop manager in Tenby for more than 25 years and has helped raise more than £1m for the lifesaving charity.
Receiving British Empire Medals were Mrs Wendy Barnett BEM, Dr Michael Bartlett BEM and Miss Elly Neville BEM.
The British Empire Medal is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. It rewards a sustained, local contribution or innovative, high-impact work.
Mrs Barnett BEM received her honour for services to girl guiding and the community in Milford Haven.
Mrs Barnett BEM has been a Guide Leader in Pembrokeshire for 55 years and it is estimated that more than 1,000 girls have benefitted from her advice and encouragement.
Dr Bartlett BEM, a Medical Educator at Hywel Dda University Health Board, was awarded the BEM for services to Medical Education.
Thanks to his dedication, countless medical students, doctors, lifeguards and crew with the RNLI have been trained to save lives.
Miss Elly Neville BEM, aged 13, received her British Empire Medal for charitable services to cancer patients and to cancer services in Pembrokeshire.
Inspired by her father’s own cancer battle, Miss Neville BEM, became the face of the Ward 10 Flag Appeal which went on to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Withybush Hospital’s Ward 10.
The ceremony at County Hall, Haverfordwest was hosted by the Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Cllr Steve Alderman.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Jon Harvey, was also in attendance, along with invited guests of the recipients.
On Friday June 28th, Watch Manager (WM) Euros Edwards BEM, received his British Empire Medal for services to fire and rescue.
At WM Edwards’ request, the ceremony was held at Crymych Fire Station, attended by Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas KFSM, Fire Service colleagues, family and friends.
Cllr Alderman again hosted with His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, presenting WM Edwards with his medal.
Giving the closing remarks, Chief Fire Officer Thomas KFSM said it was a proud day for WM Edwards but also for the Fire Service.
He said Watch Manager Euros Edwards BEM had provided outstanding leadership in all elements of community safety and emergency response over a long career.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, said: “It was an honour and an enormous pleasure to meet such remarkable people and present the MBE and BEM medals on behalf of His Majesty The King.
“These inspirational recipients have carried out such incredible work for Pembrokeshire communities.”
