Local Artist of the Week: VARIOUS ARTISTS (from the Sickofantinc CD sampler)
Local Artist of the Week: VARIOUS ARTISTS (from the Sickofantinc CD sampler)
Following the well-received Local Artist of the Week retrospectives recently, featuring JYlt and Beneath The Reef we now bring you another, from 2001, featuring Various Artists on the Sickofantic CD sampler.
Sickofantic was a cleverly named organisation set up by Pembrokeshire College lecturers, including Chris Rees and Jim Outram, who were well placed to spot emerging talent on the local music scene. They ran a series of well attended gigs in the area giving an opportunity for these young bands, not all of whom were from the College, to strut their stuff on a big stage.
In support of these gigs they released a CD sampler that showcased these bands - 18 in all of which we highlight 6 this week.
These may not be the greatest recording ever made but as a snapshot of the Pembrokeshire scene at the time they are unrivalled. There is nothing quite like the power, passion, and energy of young bands giving a lot of what we call the most! Long may it continue.
Bands featured include JYlt (who were covered in detail recently), The Cheapskates (a wonderfully named ska/punk band fronted by Haverfordwest's Gareth Evans who often plays Tenby Blues Festival these days), Dogzuki (tough hard rocking punks from the Pembroke & Pembroke Dock areas), Myst (majestic rockers from Narberth), Familiar (with their summer pop moves), and Cyclonic ( of whom the sleeve notes say have vocals with "more meat than a land fill site", whatever that means).
Other bands on the CD are FOD, Serpentine, SOA, Brother Vegetable, Fearns Fire, Ruxpin, Convulsion, Sick Kids Experience, Grind, Dojo, King Rat, and Anon.
Anyone with memories of these bands why not tell us about them? Contact studio@purewestradio.com.
