In February 2024 Valero Pembroke Refinery gave Sign and Share Club £1,000 to use on trips and events. In May, 24 people visited Aberystwyth to see the Butterfly house and Cliff Railway and, in July, 20 members went to Aberglasney Gardens. The remainder of the grant will be used in September when the club will be attending ‘Deaf Gathering Cymru’, in Cardiff.
The funding has allowed members of the club to visit places of interest which are not easy to access because they have specific communication needs. The grant pays for transport, interpreters, and volunteers, to ensure everyone can be fully involved during our trips.
One of our members said “I joined Sign and Share club during lockdown and became reclusive like many other people. The trips that I have enjoyed with the club have increased my confidence tremendously, as we have excellent support and communication is so much easier. We have been able to visit places that I would never have been able to visit on my own, and I have made so many wonderful new friends.”
Sign and Share Club was started in 2013 and welcomes anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. We meet twice a month in the Pembrokeshire area and are planning to start BSL and deaf awareness courses in September.
