Warning over flash rips at popular Pembrokeshire beach
Reports are coming in of high energy ‘flash rip’ waves at Newgale beach.
Lifeguards have reported that over 12 rescues had to be carried out on Tuesday, July 23, after the exceptionally strong waves began carrying bathers and surfers offshore.
They confirmed that because the sandbanks have shifted, bathers are being caught unawares by the strong rips that are appearing suddenly, even on calm days.
The flash rips can carry bathers over 100 metres offshore in less than a minute, and are the major cause of surf drownings and rescues. Surfers, however, often use rips to their advantage to help them swim out through the surf quickly.
