Peter Walker is swapping his bicycle for a pair of walking boots.
Peter Walker who organised the Tour of Pembrokeshire for many years was due to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats with his friend Nick Slevin to raise money for the Christie Cancer Trust in Manchester.
Unfortunately, a few weeks before the pair were due to set off, Nick’s wife Carrie was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer and so her well-being became paramount.
With generous support, Peter and Nick had raised over £10,000 and now Peter has decided to walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in recognition of the donations made and in the hope of raising further funds.
Peter will set off from Amroth on an unsupported walk over the 186 miles to St Dogmaels on the 2nd June and he will be joined from time to time by family and friends who will help to raise more money. Visitors to the JustGiving page will be able to track his progress and join him along the way.
Nick, who is now retired, was a professor of oncology at The Christie which is the largest single site cancer centre in Europe and the first UK centre to be accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre. The hospital treats more than 60,000 patients a year a number of whom come from West Wales.
The staff at The Christie have been looking after Carrie and she is currently responding quite well to the treatment. She said that she can’t thank them enough for the care, attention and expertise they’ve shown her over the past few months and she now knows first hand how beneficial the work they do is.
Peter said that he is really looking forward to the walk and intends to enjoy every moment. He plans to follow the Cicerone guide and will be camping at designated campsites or on land where he has obtained the landowner’s permission. He said “I think it’s fabulous that I can carry out this challenge without having to leave Wales, I’ll be climbing over 10,000 metres (more than Mount Everest) in the knowledge that with fair weather I’ll be rewarded by wonderful scenery, interesting wildlife and fascinating features and I’m really pleased to be able to support my friend and The Christie not least because you never know when you might need them.”
Peter hopes you will enter into the spirit of the challenge and help him to promote it and if you’ve already donated he particularly wishes to thank you. If you’d like to give your support by donating, joining in or forwarding this message to your friends and family, he knows The Christie would be most grateful.
