Exciting Climate Change Education Workshops Pembrokeshire Primary schools saving the planet by building giant sustainable cities
--
Exciting environmental sustainability events are happening in Pembrokeshire primary schools this year. Planet CIC are taking specialised recycled Lego into the local primary schools to enable local children to build giant environmentally sustainable cities, helping them to understand what our urban environments should look like and what we can do to help create them. Over 700 children have already taken part.
In April 2024 the UN climate chief pressed for faster action, saying humanity has 2 years left ‘to save the world’ so it’s all hands on deck to achieve it!
On average 100 children at each school participate, from nursery to year 6 children, working collaboratively to create a spectacular city that supports wildlife, conserves energy, protects water and reduces carbon emissions. The children generate renewable electricity to power the city, building solar, land and offshore wind farms. They encourage the population to recycle with a vast array of bins and recycling centres, clothes swaps, and repair shops, encouraging people to buy less and purchase things produced locally or from businesses that take their environmental responsibility seriously.
There is a sustainable transport infrastructure enabling people to walk, cycle or use public transport and vehicle sharing much more easily. Local and vertical food farms, allotments and fruit trees all over the city enable food to be grown locally reducing C02 levels, increasing physical and mental health whilst improving the economy. Clean healthy rivers, wetlands, bioswales and seas support nature, reduce flooding and pollution. They build energy efficient homes and businesses with superb insulation, solar panels for energy, water collection, composting and waste recycling, EV charging points, green roofs, wild gardens rich with pollinator plants providing biodiversity corridors. The whole city is tapestry of greenspaces providing food, shelter and safe corridors for insects and animals as well as a wonderful place for humans to live.
7 of these brilliantly sustainable cities have already been built in the local primary schools including - Broad Haven, Johnston, St Francis, St Marks, Coastlands, Fenton and Waldo Williams. The children loved them, learning a huge amount about climate change solutions they can put into practice now and in the future, they are inspired to develop careers in sustainable housing, transport, energy, biodiversity, food production, water conservation, recycling and producing products that don’t harm the environment.
These workshops continue this Autumn and Spring of 2025 and hope to be ongoing, they are looking to help other social enterprises in other Welsh counties and the UK to support in delivering these workshops so that all children can have the opportunity. They can also be used for businesses and councils to help them visualise what needs to be done, offering an achievable road map of solutions.
These workshops are the first of their kind, the children are left buzzing with solutions and ambitions to drive positive change locally and help our planet.
Mike Lowde at Fenton CP School highly recommends the workshops “Through collaboration and creativity, they designed and built innovative city models, critically thinking about how to
enhance their communities for a better future. This hands-on experience not only empowered them to consider their impact on the world but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills. Together, they explored how small changes can lead to significant improvements, proving that everyone can contribute to a sustainable world. What a truly fantastic and memorable experience!”
Planet CIC is a social enterprise founded by Kate Evans, it is a recruitment business that puts all of its profits into educational environment initiatives for young people with the aim of helping to reduce climate change. All of the workshops are completely free to the schools.
Planet CIC moved to Pembrokeshire in 2022, they have also run biodiversity, tree planting, water conservation and renewable energy workshops as part of their School Sustainability Programme and hope to bring these to the area soon. They are keen to work in collaboration with the incredible work already being delivered by the Darwin Trust, PCF, PCNP and Celtic Deep to ensure that local children are equipped with the information and awareness they need for a safer, more sustainable future.
