Over £36,000 raised in memory of Crymych rugby player Marc Beasley
A Pembrokeshire rugby club has raised over £36,000 in memory of a highly-respected player who died earlier this year.
Crymych Rugby Club held a commemorative match on Sunday, August 25, in memory of Marc Beasley who died of a heart attack on March 15 at the age of 37. He had been an accomplished player and a member of Crymych Rugby Club since his school days.
The match, which was held at Parc Lloyd Thomas in Crymych, was attended by over 750 people, who helped raise the four-figure sum for the Marc Beasley Fund which was set up to raise money for heart screening for rugby players.
As part of the event, 50 men played for Team Beasley which included past and present players who all wore a blue shirt as they faced off against the Bulls team.
Commenting on Marc's death, Carwyn Rees, who was one of the event organisers, said the club was still in shock following his death.
"Marc was a pillar of strength for our club in so many ways, and always had a smile on his face," he said.
"He wasn't just a rugby player but a friend to everyone. His loss has been felt by us all."
Carwyn said that Marc's death came as a shock to all who knew him.
"He was so fit and healthy and this made us realise just how important it was for us to do something special in his honour, and this was the reason for the game."
Meanwhile Marc's sister, Heulwen Beasley-Park, said her brother would have been delighted with the support and efforts that helped make last week's match such a success.
"He would have been delighted to have seen all his friends taking part in the game," she said. "It was wonderful top see so many people coming together and taking part."
Heulwen went on to thank the north Pembrokeshire community for embracing the event in such a strong way.
"The whole day meant so much to us as a family and the memories of the day are something we will treasure for evermore," she said.
