10 INDEPENDENT FILMS AT THE TORCH THANKS TO FFILM CYMRU WALES
The Torch Theatre, Milford Haven is one of eight venues across Wales to have been awarded Film Exhibitor Funds by Ffilm Cymru Wales. Torch will deliver Warm Spaces activity as part of its cinema programme screening 10 independent films between 21 February and 25 April with free teas and coffees available, alongside a post-screening discussion.
With National Lottery funding delegated by the Arts Council of Wales, Ffilm Cymru Wales provides support to independent film exhibitors to entertain and inspire people throughout the nation with a greater choice of films. As part of the organisation’s commitment to innovation, inclusion and sustainability, their Film Exhibitor Fund encourages cinemas and film festivals to develop their work in an evolving sector, connecting their local communities through cinema.
Chelsey Gillard, Torch Theatre’s Artistic Director said: “We are looking forward to opening our doors as part of Warm Spaces from February, offering reduced price screenings over the winter months. 10 weekly screenings of independent films curated by a panel of audience members will bring people together at the Torch’s cinema with free teas and coffees and post-film conversations.”
The films on offer, with tickets priced at £3 each, include: Lost in Translation (2003) – a coming-of-age drama/comedy where a fading movie star falls for a lonely young woman in Tokyo; I, Daniel Blake (2016) – a political drama where after surviving a heart-attack, a 59-year-old carpenter must fight bureaucratic forces to receive Employment and Support Allowance; Chuck, Chuck Baby (2023) sees Helen living with her ex-husband, his 20-year-old girlfriend, their new baby, and his dying mother Gwen. Her life is a grind, and like all the other women she toils with at the local chicken factory, her life spent in service of the clock and Hedd Wyn (1992) starring Huw Garmon, Catrin Fychan and Ceri Cunnington. A young poet living
in the North Wales countryside competes for the most coveted prize of all in Welsh Poetry - that of the chair of the National Eisteddfod, a tradition dating back a hundred years. Before the winner is announced Hedd Wyn gets sent to fight with the English in the trenches of the First World War.
Other films are: Parasite (2019); The Boy and The Heron (2023); Hard Truths (2024); Bird (2024); On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024) and The Stimming Pool (2024) - a unique film exploring a world shaped by neurodiverse perspectives.
