Havens at War exhibition, celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
As part of the national celebrations of VE 80 Day, a history exhibition about RAF Talbenny will be held in the Bowen Memorial Hall in Little Haven. This free entry event will take place from Tuesday 22nd to Thursday 24th April, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with locals and visitors alike invited to enjoy a rare glimpse of this fascinating era of history, and share family memories of this exceptional time. Teas, coffees and cakes will be available along with a raffle.
A significant contribution to the war effort was made by Talbenny Airfield, located in The Havens in Pembrokeshire. Opened in May 1942, the airfield hosted, amongst others, the Czech 311 Squadron, Flying Vickers Wellington aircraft, to undertake anti-submarine duties over the Bay of Biscay in the Battle of the Atlantic.
Organised by the St Madoc of Ferns Community group (SMoFCG), the exhibition will explore the people, lives and events of WW2 in The Havens, the romances that blossomed and some surprising outcomes.
Alison Gibby, Secretary of SMoFCG, was lucky enough to meet some of the 311 Squadron members and learn of their experiences. She said ‘this is such an important part of our local heritage which must be kept alive to honour those who fought and died for us. The exhibition captures many fascinating details of the daily lives, tragedies and achievements of that time which you won’t find in the history books!’
Details of the exhibition can be found on the SMoFCG website https://stmadocofferns.wales. Parking is available in Little Haven car park on St Brides Road which is only a short walk from the Bowen Memorial Hall (SA62 3UN).
