Golden start to the year for members of BJJ Pembrokeshire.
It’s quite literally been a golden start to the year for members of BJJ Pembrokeshire.
Last month, three of their youngsters travelled to Belgrade, Serbia, for the European MMA Youth Championships. Ava Tyrie, Ieuan Garrett, and Mason Hubbard were all selected to represent Wales and came home having done their club and country proud.
After reaching her final, Ava was crowned European champion after submitting a Bulgarian opponent with a head and arm choke manoeuvre. Despite missing out on medals, Ieuan and Mason also proved they were unfazed by the international stage, with the trio set for more Welsh representation in the future.
Overall, the 11-strong Welsh team finished fourth.
Mollie Fitzpatrick and Lorenco Merrony Janota were also picked to go to Belgrade but could not travel. However, the pair, along with Oliver John and Tyler Young, have had their own successful start to the year after winning gold medals at the Welsh Championships in January.
Mason and Ieuan also competed, and both took home silver, with Iestyn John winning bronze
“As a team, with Wales, we did unbelievably well,” said head trainer at BJJ, Stuart Tyrie, who also helps coach the national side.
“But also BJJ Pembrokeshire. We did have five selected but two couldn’t go, but we’re hoping for more major success this summer and take many members to the world championships in Abu Dhabi.
“On top of that, we came away from the inaugural Welsh Championships as overall champions. So it’s been an absolutely crazy but amazing start to the year.”
