Full of Magic and Menace- the Royal Ballet and Opera presents a brand-new production
DIE WALKÜRE – a new production by The Royal Ballet and Opera will present a live screening at the Torch Theatre this May as part of its cinema season. Directed by Barrie Kosky and conducted by Antonio Pappano, viewers are in for a treat. Sung in German with subtitles, the Gods and mortals battle in the second chapter of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, the mythical adventure that began with Das Rheingold in 2023.
On a stormy night, fate brings two strangers together, unleashing a love with the power to end worlds. Meanwhile, in the realm of the gods, an epic battle ensues between their ruler Wotan (Christopher Maltman) and his rebellious daughter, Brünnhilde (Elisabet Strid). Set designer, Rufus Didwiszus, Costume designer, Victoria Behr and Lighting Designer Alessandro Carletti will bring you a terrific visual treat.
“Victoria Behr’s costumes suggest a non-specific here and now, although Siegmund’s blue top and yellow hoodie hint at Ukraine. Rufus Didwiszus’s sets are dark and bleak: a wall of burnt planks for Sieglinde’s house and, later, the felled World Ash Tree from Rheingold, which with the cast clambering through its holes and tunnels at times resembles a meerkat burrow. The almost feral Valkyries collect charred corpses which disintegrate into ash. Finally, every Walküre needs a good Magic Fire at the end, and this one doesn’t disappoint,” wrote Erica Jeal of the Guardian, who awarded the production four stars.
Tickets for DIE WALKÜRE on Sunday 18 May at 2pm are £20 / £18 concessions and £9 for those under 26. Visit the website for further details www.torchtheatre.co.uk or phone the Box Office on (01646) 695267.
