Young people enjoy international learning exchange trip from Oberkirch to Haverfordwest
Haverfordwest Youth Club had the pleasure of welcoming 20 young people and their teachers from Oberkirch, Germany, as part of a return visit last month.
Oberkirch has been twinned with Haverfordwest since 1989, fostering a long-standing partnership between the two communities.
The visit on April 7th followed a successful exchange in August 2024, when 20 members of Haverfordwest Youth Club, and their youth workers, travelled to Oberkirch.
Both trips were funded through the Taith programme – an initiative supporting international learning exchanges in Wales, funded by the Welsh Government.
The five-day visit to Pembrokeshire offered young people a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture, build meaningful friendships, and support their personal, social, and educational development.
The group took part in a full and engaging programme of activities, beginning with a welcome evening at The Edge Youth Centre where they were introduced to members of the Haverfordwest community and treated to a performance by the talented Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir.
Additional activities included a scenic coastal path walk, visits to historical sites, various cultural experiences, and a tour of Haverfordwest High VC School.
Feedback highlighted how much the group thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Pembrokeshire, particularly appreciating the stunning views and natural landscape.
Liz Griffiths, Community Youth Team Manager, said: “Taking part in this international learning exchange programme has been an enriching experience for the young people, broadening their cultural horizons and providing valuable opportunities for travel and learning.
“They conducted themselves with great maturity and courtesy, serving as outstanding ambassadors for Oberkirch. We are hopeful that this marks the beginning of more frequent exchanges between the young people of our twin towns.”
